Fukushima Update: Hydrogen, Pressure Changes after Earthquake

Fukushima Update # 82: December 9, 2012

by Nelle Maxey

It appears there WAS a reaction to the large Dec 7 earthquake at Fukushima in Unit 1.

Despite reports to the contrary in the general press, hydrogen concentrations, pressure and radioactivity levels are still rising in Unit 1 torus.

The explanation for this is that corium (the melted core) forms a crust as it cools. When an earthquake occurs, the crust cracks exposing the meltdown reaction to the water in the torus each time.

Here is the new article (Dec 8) from SimplyInfo. If you click on the links to see the readings, you need to scroll to the far right to see them. Radioactivity is indicated by “(DW)B Sv/hr” column and Hydrogen by “B % vol” column.

Unit1: Post Quake Reaction & Torus Oddity Indicate Larger Problem

"We have reported extensively about a phenomenon going on inside unit 1 since the accident. Whenever there is a strong quake, the radiation in the Drywell B sensor goes up considerably, pressure and other readings tend to also fluctuate in unison. After the initial meltdowns these reactions were quite intense. Now 1 year and 9 months into the disaster we still see this same activity.

The recent 7.3 quake at Fukushima caused this same reaction. …Unit 1 also has extremely high radiation levels below the water surface in the suppression chamber."
