Club of Rome to meet in Ottawa in September To Examine ‘Governance of the Commons’ Based on Ostrom

Ottawa, June 10, 2013 – The Club of Rome, in association with the Canadian Association for the Club of Rome, will hold its annual General Assembly on September 19, followed by a conference. The AGM and the conference will be held September 19-21, with full details – including the program and costs – to be posted soon on the conference website.

“Governance of the Commons” is a formal way of asking how people should best manage the resources we all share. The Commons includes resources such as the air, the atmosphere, the oceans, fresh water, soil, energy, and even the Internet.  The atmosphere has drawn most attention recently because our increasing emissions of greenhouse gases are contributing to global warming.

The conference theme takes its inspiration from the work of the late 2009 Nobel laureate, Elinor Ostrom as a point of reference for the idea of governance. Discussions will focus on three broad areas:

•             the rule of law, sovereignty, governance and enhancement of the commons;

•             options for the governance of energy resources and protection of the commons; and

•             provincial-municipal governance of water resources

Noted national and international speakers will present and debate their views both on panels and individually.

Why should you care? What one of us does to the Commons affects everyone. The quality of life of our children and theirs will depend on how we treat the Commons. The Club of Rome is a prestigious international organization with a long record of intelligent debate on key global issues and informed decision-making. To lead an examination of Governance of the Commons, the Club of Rome brings a high level of intellectual freedom and a proven track record.
