“Taking a stance against the Kinder Morgan pipeline proposal is a fantastic way for Adrian Dix and the NDP to commemorate Earth Day,” said Ben West Tar Sands Campaign Director for ForestEthics Advocacy.
Up until now the NDP had made it clear that they were strongly opposed to the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline. The NDP has committed to withdrawing from the environmental assessment equivalency agreement with federal government and create a made-in-BC process that would apply to both the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipelines. Today’s announcement was the clearest sign from the BC NDP that they would actively oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
“We are happy to hear that the BC NDP intends to stand up to the Harper government and defend our coast and our climate by opposing both of these pipelines,” said West. “Dix has a clear lead in the polls and This announcement sends a strong message that an NDP-led government intends to listen to First Nations and BC communities and work with the environmental movement to move beyond this focus on pipelines and tankers to opening up a discussion about how we can create a green economy we can all be proud of,” said West.
