Shawnigan Lake, BC, April 2, 2013 – A dramatic turn out on Saturday of the Shawnigan Lake community in protest
of the Provincial Government’s decision to grant a permit to South Island Aggregates (SIA) to dump 100,000 tons of contaminated soil into the Shawnigan Lake Watershed yearly for 50-years, continues to fall on deaf ears in Victoria.
Over 2,700 signatures and countless letters of protest to the Ministry of Environment, Minister Terry Lake, Premier Christy Clark and Deputy Minister Wes Shoemaker, the Government remains committed to trumping science over the will of big business. The protection of safe drinking water for over 7,000 people who rely on Shawnigan Lake as their water source, does not factor in to Government’s high-risk decision.
“The protection of our drinking water is the key responsibility of Government and the Ministry of the Environment…in this case, Christy Clark’s Government has proven that support of big business continues to come ahead of the safety of our community and places our families at long term risk” SRA Director Sally Davies.
Government is ignoring the community of Shawnigan Lake. It is the expectation of the SRA and the people of our community that Government will protect the best interest of the people. The Premier and Minister Lake must protect our drinking water and overturn SIA’s contaminated soil dump permit in our watershed.
The SRA continues to stand behind our community in the opposition of the SIA Permit and encourages Government to halt and reverse its decision.
