Dr. Vandana Shiva Endorses a GE Free Vancouver Island

Victoria, BC, March 26, 2013 – Tomorrow Dr. Vandana Shiva will receive her honorary degree from the University as part of their 50 Anniversary Celebrations. During her visit she endorsed the GE Free Vancouver Island Campaign.

Linda Geggie from the Capital Region Food and Agriculture Initiatives Roundtable (CRFAIR) asks residents to learn more about the issue.  "Metchosin and Saanich have passed resolutions to ban genetically modified seeds and plant stocks in their jurisdictions.  This recognizes their support for local community based agriculture on the island."

Metchosin is leading the call for a GE Free Resolution from the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities AGM and Convention in April. Food advocates and local agriculture supporters are asking their municipalities to get on side.

"I strongly support a GE Free Vancouver Island.  There is so much happening here to create a better food system based on local diverse ecological community based farming-  and that kind of farming is totally inconsistent with the spread of GMO's.

GMOs' mean monoculture, GMOs' mean monopoly, GMO's mean contamination,

GMO's mean the destruction of the alternative that Vancouver Island is creating"

says Dr. Vandana Shiva.

She urges residents and decision makers to "Keep Vancouver Island GE Free, Join the movement for seed freedom, food freedom and food democracy, that is where our future lies."
