Oil Barge at Cape Mudge

Dear Lovers of the BC Coast: I am alerting you all to a great current and regular threat to our waters.

Right now as I write this, the 10,000 ton-capacity American tug/barge combo, Nathan E Stewart/DBL 55 is approaching Cape Mudge at the south end of Quadra Island northbound at 5.2 knots, headed for Ketchikan Alaska.

Oil-soaked barge surrounded by oil-containing booms (Tampa Bay) NOAAThis tanker is owned by Texas-based Kirby Marine, -which also owns the tanker which is currently spewing crude oil into Galveston Bay on the Gulf of Mexico.

Nathan E Stewart and its 10,000 ton tanker DBL55 have a history of near disasters here on the Pacific Coast, including a December 2011 incident where both engines were swamped in 30-ft seas of Cape Fairweather Alaska, after which they required a tow from the US Coast Guard, -see footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMoxgaItykA

I’m asking all of my friends on the water to please educate yourself about this dreadful Big-Oil threat to our coast. You can AIS-track it here: http://www.marinetraffic.com/en/

If you see it, please take pictures and post them, and send them to me. We need to bring this issue into focus, watch it, track it, block it, stop it, and send it back where it came from before it does the unthinkable.

Cheers,  Ingmar
